01

THE STARTING POINT

The idea behind it.

Explore the boundary between image processing and terminal art by translating video frames into ASCII.

THE CHALLENGE

Keeping motion recognizable in a restricted character palette while managing frame processing and terminal readability.

THE APPROACH

Use Python video processing to map brightness and optionally color into character sequences, then render or export the result.

02

WHAT WENT INTO IT

Built with intention.

01 / FEATURE

Frame-to-text mapping

Represent source video frames with gradients of ASCII characters.

02 / FEATURE

Terminal playback

Display animated frames directly in a terminal for a retro rendering effect.

03 / FEATURE

Color options

Preserve color cues when desired rather than rendering strictly monochrome frames.

04 / FEATURE

Video output

Optional MP4 rendering to share character-based animations beyond the terminal.

03

STATE OF THE BUILD

Where it stands.

CURRENT STATUS / ARCHIVED

An original Python experiment in the archive; a future update is being considered.

Archive project: the original source is public, but a future update has not been released.
04

THE NEXT ITERATION

Never really finished.

01

Modernize the CLI structure

02

Benchmark processing and export speed

03

Improve presets and documentation
